Improving On An Inexpensive Coconut Palm Tree | Tutorial
Thinking about inexpensive plastic palm trees for the last couple of weeks after our Mini Lighthouse video, I thought I’d take another look at these inexpensive trees and see if I could improve on them. I did the work in this video very casually. By that I mean not going in under magnification to make sure every palm frond was molded perfectly from the factory, they’re not! Not making sure every bit of the twine is laid in place perfectly, again, they’re not. I think that as long as work like this has a consistency to it, and reasonable idea of what you’re trying to achieve and care given to each step, projects like this become easier and your work, the final result, will inevitably get better.
What really pushed me to do this coconut palm tree project was a video by Boulder Creek Railroad here on YouTube. I was taken with their use of twine to represent dead palm leaves, or fronds. Wonderful! By the way, they do some amazing modeling on that channel, definitely check them out out for modeling inspiration, I know I do.
I really like little projects like this palm tutorial, not revolutionary modeling but incremental little improvements that can make a very basic model look just a bit better. I also like the fact that these are inexpensive trees to begin with, as are all the bits needed to improve them. `
